How is Fertility Tested?
Depending on the specific challenges you encounter during preconception, your provider can determine which screenings will provide the answers you’re looking for. Fertility assessments can vary and include:
- Blood work
- Urine tests
- Ultrasounds
- Tubal patency assessments
- Laparoscopy
With these tests, we’re able to assess a variety of factors that can affect a woman’s fertility, like prolactin levels, thyroid function, and egg supply. It’s important to stay in communication with your dedicated provider throughout your preconception planning so that they’re up to date on your current challenges and experiences.
Should I Get a Fertility Assessment?
It’s not uncommon for conception to take up to six months from when you begin trying. Most women will want to discuss their fertility with their primary women’s healthcare provider if they:
- Have been trying for 12+ months (under the age of 35)
- Have been trying for 6+ months (age 35+)
- Have irregular periods or anovulatory cycles
- Have been diagnosed with PCOS, endometriosis, or another condition that can affect fertility
Your Premier Women’s Health of Minnesota provider can help you decide which assessments will benefit you and connect you with a fertility specialist or endocrinologist.
