The Role of an ObGyn Hospitalist

An ObGyn hospitalist, also called a laborist, performs the dedicated role of providing care to pregnant women during labor and delivery in a hospital setting.

Even with a due date, you can never truly predict when the baby will arrive. Many women may see the same provider from the beginning of their pregnancy journey, through to delivery and post-pregnancy. However, based on timing, that may not always be possible.

In these instances, an ObGyn hospitalist can provide their expertise. Since they focus solely on labor and delivery, they’re able to be especially agile in adapting to quickly changing conditions that can accompany a delivery.

Continuity of Care Throughout Your Pregnancy

It’s common for women to build a trusting relationship with a particular provider who they see throughout their pregnancy. If baby arrives during a time when your dedicated provider cannot be present, a laborist is able to provide that continuity of care you need to feel safe during delivery.

In many cases, the ObGyn hospitalist provides their services in the interim between when you arrive at the hospital and when your provider can be present.
