Nurse Practitioner
About Leslie Newman, CNP
Leslie Newman is a nurse practitioner at Southdale OBGYN’s Edina and Burnsville offices. She has more than a decade of experience providing care and counsel for women of all ages.
Leslie earned her bachelor’s degree in French with a minor in Political Science from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. She then earned a Master of Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
Leslie loves having the opportunity to forge ongoing relationships with her patients. Many of the patients she sees first came to her as young women looking for contraceptive care, transitioned into young adult life, found their life partner and then saw her for pregnancy care as they started building their families.
“My work is really rewarding. I chose women’s health and the field of OBGYN because I’m passionate about women’s health and reproductive rights. It’s a natural fit to work in this arena,” she said.
Leslie has spent her entire career as a nurse practitioner at Southdale OBGYN, impressed by the collaborative and family-friendly practice that she says promotes work-life balance. “At Southdale OBGYN, we have the opportunity to be successful medical professionals AND parents with a fulfilling family life,” she said.
She stresses that a big part of her job is educating patients so they can feel empowered in their healthcare decisions. Leslie notes that today’s patients are well informed and really want to be heard during consultations with their medical providers.
“I want them to feel like a partner and in the driver’s seat for their healthcare,” Leslie said. “Having a collaborative relationship with patients leads to better outcomes.”
Throughout her time at Southdale OBGYN, Leslie has pursued additional training & education in lactation and infertility, and she enjoys being a resource for her colleagues in these specialty areas. She is also a preceptor at the University of Minnesota, working to educate the next generation of nurse practitioners. “The caliber of the students I’ve worked with is phenomenal and I find myself learning from them and their life experiences at the same time that I am teaching them,” she said.
Outside of the office, Leslie is married and they have two school-aged kids; she loves volunteering at the kids’ school. She has two Siamese cats that she describes as “the cutest little troublemakers” and volunteers with a kitten rescue. She enjoys mountain biking with her family, gardening and home improvement projects. She’s also a skilled baker and makes her kids’ birthday cakes every year and biscotti for the entire office for the holidays.
