How are Vulvovaginal Conditions Treated?

As hormone levels change for women during certain phases, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, the vulva’s shape and lining will change in response. This can make the area more susceptible to certain conditions, which your healthcare provider can help treat.

Treatments for vulvovaginal conditions can vary from medications to therapies to surgeries. The right treatment for you will depend on your symptoms as well as the type of condition you have.

Vulvodynia

Vulvodynia is one of the common vulvovaginal conditions that women experience. Diagnosed as pain that affects the vulva area for more than three months, vulvodynia can cause burning, irritation, and rawness. Your provider may recommend that you wear specific fabrics or take certain medications to help you manage your symptoms.

This condition has been attributed to several different causes, including:

  • Inflammation of the vulva
  • Certain genetic disorders
  • Sensitivity to certain foods
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Nerve damage or irritation

Vaginitis

Vaginitis is another related condition that can cause vaginal inflammation and excessive discharge. It can be caused by a range of factors working together, such as antibiotics and sexual intercourse. Yeast infections are one of the most common types of vaginitis.

To treat this condition, your provider may recommend medication, cream, or gel to soothe the area and reduce your pain. We’ll also discuss habits that can help prevent vaginitis in the future.
