Nicole Dishong, CNM
Nurse Midwife
About Nicole Dishong, CNM
CNM Nicole Dishong is a practicing midwife at Southdale ObGyn in Edina and Burnsville. She has been in healthcare and obstetrics for more than 30 years, starting as a nurse’s assistant, becoming an LPN and a RN and then earning her masters degree in midwifery.
She earned a bachelor degree from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. and a masters degree from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M.
Dishong has been practicing midwifery for a decade and spend 17 years as a labor and delivery nurse. “I always wanted to be a midwife—I wanted to be the one to catch the baby!” she said.
She especially enjoys being there for women in labor, but she also likes being involved in women’s well care exams and family planning. She moved to the Twin Cities after the passing of her mother so she could be closer to her sister—a longtime Minnesota resident. She was drawn to Southdale ObGyn due to the practice’s collaborative team and she “got the sense that everyone is here for the good of the patient,” Dishong said.
She says her main job is to give women the best evidence-based information so they can make the decision on how they want to proceed with their care. “Being part of empowering women to make informed decisions about their healthcare feels good,” she said.
Many of Dishong’s patients are having their second, third or fourth baby under her care, which has led to many long-term relationships. She also finds it rewarding to counsel young women getting their first pap smear and then caring for that same woman as she has her first baby later in life.
“That’s really special—the evolution of the relationship from talking about birth control to pregnancy,” she said. “I love what I do. All aspects of it.”
Outside of work, Dishong is a voracious reader, walks her dogs around Lake Harriet, enjoys music, plays guitar, spends time with her friends and 22-year-old daughter, and loves checking our restaurants in the Twin Cities.
