Physical Therapy in Women’s Healthcare

Physical therapy plays an important role in your overall health. Our providers may recommend that you meet with one of our physical therapists based on your health history and needs.

Physical therapy can help you:

  • Strengthen and relax the pelvic floor
  • Alleviate pregnancy pain and prepare for childbirth
  • Resolve issues with incontinence or constipation
  • Manage symptoms of endometriosis
  • Alleviate pain during intercourse
  • Treat postpartum and pelvic pain

Your pelvic floor muscles play a big role in how well your bladder functions. Learn more on our blog: “Advances in Bladder Health: Let’s Talk”

Physical Therapy and the Pelvic Floor

If you are experiencing unusual or prolonged pelvic pain, lower back pain, or issues with urinary leaking, our team may recommend you meet with our physical therapists to assess and help to coordinate your pelvic floor muscles. These muscles are responsible for supporting the bladder, uterus, bowel, and more. Physical therapists work with you on your pelvic floor muscles, your core, and overall conditioning, which can improve health concerns.

Physical Therapy and Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman’s body will experience several changes as the baby develops. Physical therapy can help alleviate lower back and hip pain for pregnant women. Our physical therapists can also help prepare your pelvic muscles for childbirth and reduce postpartum pain.

Dry Needling

Some of our clinics offer dry needling to people who have muscle, joint and soft tissues concerns, as well as pain. Dry needling is a skilled technique performed by a specially-trained physical therapist using a special type of needle. A dry needle is inserted into a muscle at a site called a “trigger point”, causing the muscle to contract and then relax. This process helps to “reset” the nervous system and help the muscle and surround areas to heal. Learn more about dry needling.

“Karissa Peterson has been most valuable, she listens, gives very valuable feedback and solutions. I’m still working on the therapy she recommended for me…but I can see improvement and am following her instructions. I think anyone with prolapse bladder could really benefit from this therapy. I would highly recommend her to anyone with my problem (prolapse bladder) she is excellent!”
