What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is an X-ray image of breast tissue collected during mammography screening. This is done to detect breast cancer or other problems in the breast tissue.

Your healthcare provider will recommend a screening based on your health history and needs. Most women will need a mammogram every one to two years starting around age 50. However, if you are at risk for breast cancer or have developed symptoms before then, your provider may recommend screenings sooner.

Maintaining Breast Health

If you are not at the recommended age for routine mammograms, there are still a few things you can do to maintain good breast health. Your provider may perform a clinical breast exam during your regular visits. Our providers can show you what to look for in terms of breast shape, size, and structure, so you can continue to perform self-checks at home. The more familiar you are with your breast tissue, the faster we can address any unusual signs or symptoms.

Preparing for Your Mammogram

A mammography screening is a thorough process done to collect front and side images of each breast. During the screening, your breasts will be flattened against two flat, plastic plates in order to capture these 2D or 3D images.

You may experience some brief discomfort during your screening, but your provider will be there to walk you through the entire process. To ensure that the images are clear and easy to interpret, it’s important to avoid wearing any deodorant, perfume, or lotion.

Once the mammogram has been collected, a radiologist will review and score the results. Your provider will be in touch soon after to go over the results with you and set aside time to meet with you and plan the next steps if needed.

Ask Your Healthcare Provider About Scheduling a Mammogram
