Sports Physicals for Teens: A Primer for Moms and Daughters

Dr. Gretchen Soberay, Family Medicine, Women’s Health Specialist

A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), is designed to assess the health and fitness of young female athletes to ensure that they can safely participate in sports activities. As a family medicine doctor specializing in women’s health, I am happy to help young women prepare for a great season of play, and start a lasting health care relationship with these athletes.

Here’s what you can expect when you come to OBGYN West:

Athlete Introduction

Tell me about yourself! There are some forms required by the state of Minnesota High School League that you and your parent will need to complete. What sports are you currently participating in and how long have you been playing? Fill me in on your past seasons and let me know what’s coming up this year. If you aren’t already my patient, I want to get to know you. I truly believe (and it’s research proven) that the better we know each other, the better health outcomes you will have.

Medical History Review

Your personal medical history, as well as your family history is important. Chronic conditions in either category may affect your health and fitness. We will talk about any previous injuries, broken bones, or surgeries you may have suffered that could affect your current play.

Medications

We will document any medications or supplements you are currently taking. I will answer questions regarding supplements for peak performance.

We will talk about any known allergies, especially to medications or insect stings.

Physical Examination

You will receive a full physical exam, with special attention paid to your heart, lungs, and musculoskeletal system. I’m probably going to make you do a one-legged squat, so start practicing that now!

Discussion of Health Habits

As a young athlete, self-care and good habits are important, so we will talk about fueling your body, hydration, sleep, and substance use.

Immunizations and Screenings

Because sports physicals are required every 3 years in the state of MN, there is a chance you’re due for an immunization. A sports physical is the perfect opportunity to get caught up on any vaccines you may need. At OBGYN West, we have these immunizations available to you.

We may elect to do some blood work, including screening for vitamin/mineral deficiencies, as well as diabetes or cholesterol issues.

Injury Prevention and Safety

I don’t want to see you back in the clinic for an injury if we can help it! Female athletes are prone to different injuries than our male counterparts. We will discuss strategies to prevent sport-specific injuries.

Counseling and Advice

Mental health, stress management, and coping strategies are all routinely discussed.

Documentation and Clearance

I will complete your Minnesota State High School League forms. This includes determining whether or not you are cleared to participate fully, need further evaluation, or have any restrictions.

This comprehensive approach assures that young female athletes are physically and mentally prepared for the demands of their sport.
