Physical Therapy in Women’s Healthcare
Physical therapy plays an important role in women’s healthcare. Our providers may recommend that you meet with one of our physical therapists based on your health history and needs.
Physical therapy can help you:
- Strengthen and relax the pelvic floor
- Alleviate pregnancy pain and prepare for childbirth
- Resolve issues with incontinence or constipation
- Manage symptoms of endometriosis
- Alleviate pain during intercourse
- Treat postpartum and pelvic pain
Physical Therapy and the Pelvic Floor
If you are experiencing any unusual or prolonged pelvic pain, lower back pain, or issues with incontinence, we may recommend you meet with our physical therapists to strengthen the pelvic floor. These muscles are responsible for supporting the bladder, uterus, and bowel. Physical therapists can show you how to strengthen these muscles through Kegel exercises, which reduce pain and related incontinence issues.
Physical Therapy and Pregnancy
During pregnancy, a woman’s body will experience several changes as the baby develops. Physical therapy can help alleviate lower back and hip pain for pregnant women. Our physical therapists can also help you strengthen the pelvic muscles in preparation for childbirth and reduce postpartum pain.
